India set to receive 1st batch of Apache Choppers after 15 months delay

New Delhi:  After a prolonged delay of over 15 months, the Indian Army is finally set to receive the first batch of Apache AH-64E attack helicopters from the United States, crucial for enhancing its combat capabilities along the western border.

As part of a $600 million deal signed in 2020, the Indian Army was scheduled to receive six Apache helicopters in two batches, beginning May–June 2024. However, the delivery was repeatedly postponed, first to December 2024 due to global supply chain disruptions, and then further due to unresolved technical issues on the US side.

Sources in the Defence Ministry now indicate that the first batch of three Apaches is likely to arrive this month, with the second batch expected by the end of the year.

The Army’s first Apache squadron, raised in March 2024 in Jodhpur, has remained without its helicopters since its formation, impacting its planned deployment. The Apaches are critical to supporting Indian Army operations on the western front, especially in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, which has increased focus on strengthening border readiness.

These AH-64E helicopters are known for their precision strike capabilities, agility, and advanced targeting systems, making them an essential addition to India’s combat aviation.

While the Indian Air Force already operates 22 Apaches under a separate 2015 deal, this will be the Army Aviation Corps’ first Apache induction, marking a significant upgrade in its offensive aerial capabilities.

The delayed delivery underscores the urgency for strategic air power reinforcement along sensitive zones.
