India launches GPU tender to boost domestic AI computing power

In a move that will propel the domestic artificial intelligence ecosystem, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is set to release a tender for procuring hundreds of powerful graphics processing units.

Just months after unveiling a Rs. 10,000 crore mission to make India a hub for AI development, the government has received an initial budgetary allocation to kickstart infrastructure development under the ambitious plan. With funds now accessible, one of the first focuses will be boosting computational abilities within the country through the planned GPU purchase.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the tender will be for acquiring between 300 to 500 GPUs. These specialized chips are critical for training complex machine learning models but access to high-end options has so far been limited within India. By facilitating GPU access through this public tender, startups and researchers will be able to dramatically boost their prototyping and testing abilities for AI tools.

It is understood the procurement exercise aims to aid the private sector primarily. The vision is that by establishing baseline compute infrastructure, entrepreneurs can more easily collaborate with the proposed resources and accelerate the development of localized solutions. This aligns with global strategies of unlocking innovation by reducing barriers faced by AI innovators.

More ambitious parts of India’s AI Mission such as large language models and domain-specific foundational models will follow in subsequent phases. But kickstarting computational infrastructure through this major GPU tender marks an important first step towards empowering Indian industry to fully participate in the AI revolution. With enhanced research abilities also on the anvil, the country is primed for major progress in its quest to become a global AI talent pool.
