    Hiked prices for Parliament canteen

    Date:

Ahead of the Session, the Parliament canteen has issued a new rate list that breaks away from the days of subsidised food at throwaway price.

The new menu is elaborate and costly.

The new rate list comes after the subsidy to Parliament canteen ended recently.

As per new rate list, issued by the Secretariat, a chapatti will now cost Rs 3 (the cheapest item) and the menu will stretch on to include a non-veg buffet worth Rs 700. Price of a veg buffet has been set as Rs 500.

The new rates will come into effect from January 29 when the Budget Session starts.

In the old rate list, a chapatti costed Rs 2, while Rs 65 would fetch you a plate of Hyderabadi Chicken biryani, and Rs 10 a kadi pakora.

In the new rate list, a plate of chicken biryani, chicken cutlet, chicken fry or a veg thali will all cost Rs 100 each, while you would have to shell out Rs 75 for chicken curry.

Mutton biryani and mutton cutlet are priced at Rs 150 each, and mutton curry at Rs 125.

Earlier in the month, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla announced that subsidy on food served at Parliament canteen would end.

While he did not specify the financial implications of the move, PTI reported that sources in Lok Sabha Secretariat said it can annually save more than ? 8 crore with the subsidy coming to an end.

Talking to reporters about preparations for the next Parliament session, beginning January 29, Speaker Om Birla said the Parliament canteens will now be run by ITDC in place of the Northern Railways.
