Hassan Nasrallah, Leader of Hezbollah, Reportedly Killed in Israeli Airstrikes on Beirut

    Date:

Israel has claimed that the prominent leader of Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah has lost his life in airstrikes carried out by the IDF on locations in Beirut, Lebanon last night. The development could mark a major turning point in the long running conflict between the two sides.

According to reports from Israel's military spokesman, the 64-year old Secretary General of Hezbollah was among those killed when over 24 sites linked to the Shiite militant group were targeted in response to rocket attacks launched into northern Israel. The airstrikes have resulted in heavy damage and several casualties are being reported from southern Beirut.

However, Hezbollah and Lebanese officials are yet to independently confirm Nasrallah's death. A source close to the group said that communication with Nasrallah was lost since Friday. If proven true, this would be the most high profile killing of a Hezbollah leader to date, considering Nasrallah's pivotal role in leading the armed wing and running operations.

As the head of one of the most well-funded non-state military groups in the , Nasrallah held immense sway in Lebanese and was seen as the only one who could make decisions regarding war or peace. His death might temporarily weaken Hezbollah but is also likely to see further escalation between both sides in the short term.

The exchange of hostilities happened following Hezbollah claiming responsibility for rocket attacks on Israel earlier in the day. Israel has maintained that it will not hesitate to go after anyone who threatens its citizens. The ongoing violence also threatens to plunge Lebanon into further turmoil amid its economic meltdown. More details on this major development are awaited as the situation remains fluid.
