Fresh Snowfall In Higher Reaches Of Kashmir, Heavy Rains Lash Plains

Srinagar, Mar 19: Higher reaches of Kashmir, including tourist resorts Gulmarg and Sonamarg, witnessed fresh snowfall on Thursday, while the plains experienced heavy rainfall, officials said.

Gulmarg in Baramulla district and Sonamarg in Ganderbal district received intermittent snowfall, with around five to six inches of fresh accumulation recorded in Gulmarg since the previous day. Several other high-altitude areas, including Pir Ki Gali along the Mughal Road in Shopian, Razdan Top, Gurez in Bandipora and Sadhna Top in Kupwara, also reported fresh snowfall.

Officials said most upper reaches of the Valley have been witnessing intermittent snowfall since Sunday.

In contrast, the plains, including Srinagar, received heavy rain, leading to a drop in temperatures across the region.

The Meteorological Department has forecast erratic weather conditions until March 20, with the possibility of intermittent light to moderate rain or snow in most areas. Higher reaches of the Chenab Valley and parts of south Kashmir may receive moderate to heavy snowfall during this period.

The MeT Office has predicted generally dry weather from March 21 to 24, though a brief spell of rain or snow may occur in some areas on March 23. Another spell of light rain or snow is likely from March 26 to 28, particularly in higher altitudes, followed by a further wet spell from March 29 to 31.

Officials also indicated chances of thunder and gusty winds with speeds of 40 to 50 km/h in some areas, along with isolated hailstorms.

The MeT Office has advised farmers to resume agricultural operations after March 21. (Agencies)
