Fresh clashes in Srinagar lead authorities to reimpose curfew

Date:

Srinagar, August 29: Fresh clashes between some youths and government security forces broke out in the Batmaloo region of Srinagar on Monday forcing the and authorities to re-impose curfew in the area.

Curfew was lifted from several parts of Kashmir, except the Pulwama district and some areas in Srinagar, after a 51-day lockdown following protests against the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani in an encounter by security forces.

Witnesses said that the protestors, who emerged from the localities of Ziyarat Batmaloo, Bazaar Batmaloo, Rekki Chowk and other adjoining areas, tried marching towards the Batmaloo bus stand when they were stopped by security forces who had to resort to aerial firing and tear-gas shells to disperse the crowd, Greater Kashmir reported.

The report added that government forces entered the localities in the Batmaloo area and bashed up pedestrians. Youths in the area also came out in large numbers and raised pro-freedom and anti- slogans.
