Legendary Player Backs Opening Combination Change for Big Tournament
With the inaugural matches of the highly anticipated T20 World Cup looming, the discussion around India’s batting order remains an intriguing talking point. While Rohit Sharma is likely to continue opening alongside a potential debutant, some believe another option could spark increased runs.
Former star batsman Wasim Jaffer has thrown his support behind shifting things around at the top. In his view, test regular Virat Kohli and young talent Yashasvi Jaiswal should start the innings together. Their records when playing that role for their respective sides indicate a strong foundation could be laid.
Kohli averages over fifty-seven as an opener for his country, finding the boundaries with ease thanks to his commanding stroke-play. Jaiswal too showed promise in limited chances for the national team last year. With the in-form RCB captain setting the tone, it allows the rookie to settle underneath.
Meanwhile, Jaffer suggests moving current captain Rohit one spot lower to number four. Despite his prolific career strikes at the death, the veteran is arguably even more devastating against spin in the middle overs. His stats in that very position for India are quite solid.
Along with Suryakumar Yadav continuing in his versatile role, Jaffer thinks this revamped structure could see the Men in Blue hunt big scores regularly. Only time will tell if the selectors opt for such a tactic as they target global glory on home soil and in the Caribbean. But with the knowledgable pundit endorsing it, a surprise cannot be completely ruled out.
