Jammu : A fierce gun battle between security forces and terrorists in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir late Monday critically injured five security personnel. The troops of Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police had launched a joint operation in the dense forests of Desa based on intelligence about the presence of terrorists in the area.
The exchange of fire broke out around 7:45 pm and lasted for over 20 minutes. In the intense crossfire, four army personnel including an officer and one police personnel were critically injured. They were urgently evacuated to nearby hospitals where doctors are battling to save their lives. Their condition remains unstable according to latest reports.
Additional reinforcements were rushed to the encounter site as the operation continued through the night. 16 Corps of Indian Army confirmed on Twitter that contact was established with terrorists around 9 pm, which led to heavy firing. While the terrorists are believed to have escaped under the cover of darkness, security forces continue searching the area.
This is the latest in a series of anti-terrorism operations being conducted extensively across Doda in recent months. The joint forces had specific intelligence that terrorists were hiding in the Desa forests and had launched the operation to flush them out. The critical injuries to the braving serving officers show how dangerous these encounters can be.
More details are awaited as the operation progresses.
