Farmer Unions to Protest Against State Government at Ambala Office on July

Two leading farmer organizations in Haryana have announced plans to stage a protest demonstration outside a key government office next month, expressing frustration with the current administration’s policies impacting agriculture.

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, who have been engaged in ongoing demonstrations near the state border with Punjab, revealed Thursday that they will hold a sit-in at the Superintendent of Police (SP) office in Ambala district on July 17th.

Farmer leaders from the groups criticized the lack of action from authorities to fulfill promises made to agriculturalists. They noted the government failed to ensure uninterrupted 8-hour daily power supply as committed, creating hardship for those relying on electricity to irrigate crops.

The unions also rejected calls to delay transplanting of paddy by one week due to concerns over high moisture content later during harvesting season, potentially impacting procurement. This reflects disagreements over optimal cropping timelines.

Jagjit Singh Dallewal, a prominent figure within the protesting farmers, stated that farmers were provided free electricity as compensation since market rates for produce remain inadequate. He dismissed attempts to divide farmers by portraying this benefit as only aiding large landowners.

The planned Ambala protest points to simmering resentment in rural communities regarding the administration’s efforts, or lack thereof, in helping a crucial sector currently facing numerous economic challenges. How authorities respond could influence political dynamics heading into elections next year.
