Famous Bollywood Director Takes Legal Action Over Unauthorized Use of His Name
Karan Johar, one of the leading filmmakers and producers in the Indian cinema, has approached the Bombay High Court against the producers and director of the upcoming Hindi movie ‘The Wedding Director: Karan and Karan’ over the unlawful usage of his name in the film’s title. Seeking a permanent injunction and restraining order, Karan has insisted that he has no association with the film or its makers and taking offense to his well-known name being directly referenced without permission.
In the petition filed with the court, it has been stated that the title of the movie makes a direct reference to Karan’s brand name, violating his personality and privacy rights. It is further mentioned that by utilizing his celebrity status and goodwill gained over the years without authorization, the film’s creators are taking undue advantage and this unauthorized usage could significantly damage his respected reputation built in the industry.
The movie is scheduled for release this Friday but the single bench of Justice R I Chagla said it will hear the plea on an urgent basis tomorrow, considering Karan’s objections.
This legal action clearly shows how seriously public figures take the protection of their name, image, and brand value created through hard work. It will be interesting to see the court’s decision in this matter balancing the right to creative expression and an individual’s right over the commercial exploitation of their identity.
