Ensure Cancer Treatment Facilities in J&K!

The transformation in healthcare facilities in Jammu and Kashmir has been evident, especially after the upgradation of infrastructure and the efforts taken by the concerned authorities during and post-COVID times. The provision of oxygen in almost all healthcare centers in J&K stands as a testament to the adage, “where there is a will, there is a way.”

Considering this crucial point, it is imperative for stakeholders to focus on making J&K a prominent hub for cancer treatment. Currently, many cancer patients from the region are compelled to seek treatment outside the Union Territory, in cities like Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Mumbai, and elsewhere across the nation.

Despite the availability of funds, as J&K has been receiving special packages and regular central government funds for many decades, historical mismanagement by the political class has hindered the efficient utilization of these resources, causing hardships for the masses.

It is encouraging that progress has been made recently, as work on establishing healthcare centers to address terminal diseases has started in both the Kashmir and Jammu Divisions. However, consistency and conviction are required, as a significant percentage of the population still seeks treatment for various types of cancer outside the region, despite facing hardships, extra costs, and other uncertainties.

It is pertinent to mention that the Health & Medical Education (H&ME) Department has allocated Rs 10.40 crore for the establishment of the State Cancer Institute (SCI) at Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme, “National Programme for Prevention of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke (NPCDCS)” for the fiscal year 2023-24, marking a crucial step in enhancing healthcare facilities in the region.

There is no doubt that the present dispensation at the Centre has done a lot to improve the lives of people in J&K. However, the treatment of cancer patients remains a challenge for the region. Ensuring failsafe treatment for all treatable cancer patients in J&K should be the next goal for the incumbent dispensations, whether at the Centre or in the Union Territory.
