Though it is undeniable that District Administration in Jammu is persistently working to improve the traffic scenario in the areas coming under its jurisdiction but it is also true that despite efforts the number of traffic violations and non-compliance of rules on the roads of Jammu is in vogue leading to accidents and related fatalities.
In this regard the District Magistrate has reportedly ordered to conduct special enforcement drives to ensure strict compliance with the Motor Vehicles Act, particularly in rural areas during a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee to review the on-going road safety measures and strategize future actions. Such meetings are necessary to improve the traffic scenario in the district because there are still places in Jammu where commuters give two hoots to the traffic rules and drive in a manner as if it was their personal fiefdom and they can do anything and everything on the roads of this district.
It is strange that despite CCTV surveillance at major crossings and deployment of umpteen number of traffic police contingents, the traffic management still is a challenging task in the region. Though the DM Jammu has directed for a focused crackdown on vehicles with obscured or tampered number plates besides action against other violators of traffic rules, the enforcement teams seem to be sluggish in their approach because such instructions have been issued many times in the past also but the state of affairs on roads remained the same.
It is advisable for the stakeholders to take a cue from the Traffic Police of Chandigarh UT, which has been playing a vital role in effectively managing the traffic and keeping the city roads safe for its citizens and visitors. Those who have the experience of driving in Chandigarh must know that the traffic police in that UT always place traffic rules and regulations as their top priority so that road users feel safe in moving around at any time of the day.
Due to valuable efforts made by the Traffic Police, the city of Chandigarh has become renowned as an island of compliance with traffic rules.
It is the need of the hour to emulate similar endeavour in Jammu District or for that matter in the entire UT of J&K to make this region also one of the best ones as far as traffic management is concerned.
