In a surprising turn of events, detained leader Engineer Rashid has won the parliamentary seat of North Kashmir, defeating previous incumbent and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Rashid, who is currently detained under the stringent Public Safety Act, contested the elections as an independent candidate. His victory shows the strong support he continues to command among the people of the region despite being imprisoned for over a year now.
The election results have been acknowledged by Abdullah, who tweeted conceding defeat and accepting the mandate of the voters. However, he expressed doubts about whether Rashid’s victory would lead to his immediate release from detention. There are also concerns that as an independent candidate, Rashid may not be able to effectively represent the constituency and voice their concerns on the floor of the parliament.
Only time will tell if Rashid is able to start participating in parliamentary proceedings from prison and raise issues facing the people on the national stage. For now, his thumping victory over the Abdullah family scion is a telling reminder that in a democracy, the vote of the public is paramount.
