Clean up at Home first !

It has become necessary for the Police department to stop pointing fingers at the public because its own personnel have been indulging in drug peddling and substance abuse because like many cases in the past, one more police constable has been arrested after a packet containing heroin was recovered from his car at Bansmorh by a Police party, led by SHO Rehambal in Udhampur District.

Reportedly, the recovered transparent polypack contained 9.63 grams of heroin. It is imperative that the investigation in such cases should be thorough, impartial, and followed by swift action so that the black sheep of the police department should face the full extent of the law and not just transfers or mere suspensions. This is a serious issue as the Police department has the onus to set an example but looking into the number of cases of similar nature one can say that men in khaki should put their house in order first before giving sermons to the different members of the society including young and the old.

It is worrisome that the Police department tasked with upholding the law and leading the fight against drug menace is itself grappling with serious allegations against its own personnel. Although the cases of involvement of cops in drug peddling and substance abuse should not hinder the fight against the menace of drugs across the Union Territory but the issue needs to be tackled with utter sincerity because cops’ involvement in drug peddling is a dangerous trend in vogue, which can act as the biggest bottleneck in the path to eradicate drug menace from the society.

It is a matter of great concern that those responsible for containing the menace are themselves involved in this illegal activity making it necessary for the helmsmen to take corrective measures as far as possible to set the things right and remove the scourge of drugs from the soil of J&K as soon as possible. The fight against substance abuse is a collective one and under the present circumstances with some cops getting involved in the crime the combat seems to fail because if the enforcers of the law will start flouting it the consequences will be disastrous. If the police truly want to lead society in the war against drugs, they must first clean up at home.
