The minimum temperature in Srinagar on Saturday night plummeted to a low of -4.2°C, making it the coldest night of the season so far.
The overnight minimum temperature was two degrees below the average minimum for this time of the year, an official at Srinagar Meteorological Centre said.
The freezing night was followed by a dense fog cover in some parts of the city, where the visibility was hazy till late Monday morning.
In its forecast, the Meteorological Centre said the weather would remain dry and cold in the city and the minimum temperature was likely to be drop nearly three degrees below the freezing point.
The freezing climatic conditions have intensified in the recent days as Kashmir witnesses the harshest phase of winter, called ‘chillai kalan'. The 40-day period began last week and will continue till end of the next month.
In the rest of the Kashmir valley, the overnight temperature dropped several degrees below the freezing point with Pahalgam in south Kashmir recording the night's lowest of -6.5°C.
Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 5.5°C while the frontier Kupwara town of north Kashmir recorded the minimum of -3.4°C.
Qazigund town of south Kashmir recorded a low of -3.6°C while Kokernag recorded a low of -2.9°C.
