Srinagar, Sept 15: Crime Branch Kashmir (CBK) has arrested a fraudster for duping people of more than ₹50 lakh by impersonating a Duty Officer to the Lieutenant Governor and offering fake government jobs and land allotments.
The accused has been identified as Abdul Majid Mir, son of Abdul Rahim Mir, a resident of Lishtiyal in Kupwara. He was apprehended in connection with FIR No. 10/2025 registered at the Economic Offences Wing of CBK.
According to investigators, Mir lured unsuspecting victims with promises of jobs in government departments and land in SDA Colony, Bemina. To make his claims appear genuine, he issued forged appointment letters in the name of the Airport Authority of India and fabricated land allotment documents purportedly from the Srinagar Development Authority (SDA).
CBK said that offences under Sections 419 (cheating by personation), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), and 471 (using forged document as genuine) of the Indian Penal Code stand registered against the accused.
The Court of Judicial Magistrate 1st Class, Srinagar, has granted five days of police remand to CBK for further investigation.
Authorities have urged the public to remain alert and avoid falling prey to such fraudulent schemes. They have also appealed to citizens to verify any job or land-related offers through official channels before making payments.
