New Delhi, Dec 2: Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned till 2 PM on Tuesday following intense protests by Opposition members against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The vociferous protest disrupted proceedings in the Lok Sabha during the Zero Hour, which lasted about 10 minutes, when several papers and standing committee reports were laid on the table.
Congress and other opposition parties raised slogans demanding an immediate discussion on the SIR exercise, highlighting their concerns over the electoral process.
In response, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju urged members to maintain decorum, emphasising the importance of listening to all voices in the House.
“It is not right to disrupt proceedings. Losing elections is not a license to vent anger here. Even the late Atal Bihari Vajpayee faced electoral setbacks,” Rijiju said, taking a subtle dig at the Congress party’s recent losses. He added, “The government is open to discussing all issues and is ready for a constructive dialogue.”
Despite the minister’s appeal, the protests continued, leading the Speaker to adjourn the session within 10 minutes.
Earlier on Tuesday, the House had adjourned till noon due to similar disruptions, following a chaotic first day marked by repeated adjournments caused by opposition protests.
The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm following continued sloganeering by Opposition MPs over the SIR issue, marking another day of disruptions in Parliament during the Winter Session.
The Upper House witnessed sharp exchanges between the new Chairperson, CP Radhakrishnan, and the Leader of the Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge.
The ongoing disruption highlights the deep divisions and heightened political tensions as Parliament grapples with sensitive electoral reforms during the Winter Session. (UNI)
