Blast Outside BJP Office At Chandigarh; 2 Suspects Identified

Chandigarh, Apr 3: Two suspects in the blast outside the Punjab BJP headquarters in Chandigarh have been identified, a senior police official said on Friday, with further investigations underway to apprehend them.

The explosion occurred around 5 pm on Wednesday when a suspected crude explosive device was hurled near the office in Sector 37. No casualties were reported. An FIR under relevant sections of the Explosives Act and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act has been registered in connection with the incident.

Police cordoned off the area and deployed personnel, while a National Investigation Agency (NIA) team inspected the site. An unverified social media video showed a man pulling the pin from a blue grenade and throwing it, while another recorded the act; the duo fled moments before the blast. Faces were not visible, and the video’s authenticity is yet to be verified. CCTV footage also captured the suspects running across the road after the explosion.

A separate unverified social media post attributed to Sukhjinder Singh Babbar of the banned Babbar Khalsa International claimed responsibility for the incident.

Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police Kanwardeep Kaur described the device as a “small crude-type” explosive. BJP state unit chief Sunil Jakhar called it an “attack” on the party office, while Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring condemned it as a “matter of grave concern.” (Agencies)
