BJP dividing opposition for UCC, poll reform: Ruhullah

Says present J&K regime has failed on multiple fronts

Srinagar, June 18: Member of Parliament and senior National Conference leader Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Thursday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to weaken and divide opposition parties across the country to facilitate the implementation of major legislative initiatives such as the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and “One Nation, One Election.”

Addressing a public gathering in South Kashmir, Ruhullah alleged that the BJP aims to secure a two-thirds majority in Parliament by engineering splits within opposition parties. He claimed that such a majority would enable the ruling party to push through key legislative proposals.

Ruhullah also criticised recent political developments involving Trinamool Congress MP Yusuf Pathan, saying leaders who are given opportunities by political parties should remain committed to the platforms that support them. He remarked that Pathan was brought from Gujarat to contest elections in West Bengal and was given a favourable political opportunity, but had failed to remain loyal to the party.

Expressing concern over the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Ruhullah said people continue to face difficulties on multiple fronts. He alleged that those in positions of authority have failed to address public grievances and ease hardships. He also voiced concern over the increasing presence of officials from outside the region in key administrative and policing positions.

The National Conference leader stressed that the struggle for the rights and interests of Jammu and Kashmir should continue through democratic and constitutional means. He urged people to remain united and actively participate in democratic processes to ensure their concerns are heard.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the programme, Ruhullah alleged that the present government has failed on multiple fronts and has not delivered meaningful change. He said that more than two years have passed without any significant transformation at either the administrative or political level and called on those in power to introspect on their performance.

He further stated that with stronger support from his party colleagues, he could have raised more issues of public importance in Parliament.

During the interaction, residents from different areas highlighted civic, developmental and administrative issues, including concerns related to infrastructure, public services, employment, education and overall development. Ruhullah assured the gathering that genuine grievances would be taken up with the concerned authorities on a priority basis.

Reiterating his commitment to public service, he said he would continue engaging with people at the grassroots level and work towards strengthening infrastructure, improving essential services and ensuring greater accountability in governance.
