Baby Declared Dead Is Born Alive: MP Hospital’s Medical Negligence Under Fire

Bhopal: In a shocking case of medical negligence, a woman in Madhya Pradesh’s Satna district delivered a healthy baby boy just hours after doctors at a government hospital declared her foetus dead. The incident has raised serious concerns about the quality of public healthcare services in the state.

Durga Dwivedi, a resident of Chakehra village in Rampur Baghelan, was first admitted to Amarpatan Civil Hospital on Monday night after experiencing labour pains. Due to complications, she was referred to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel District Hospital around 4 a.m.

Her family reported that Durga arrived at the district hospital at 7:30 a.m. After conducting blood tests, a Senior Resident doctor performed a Doppler test at 9 a.m. but reportedly failed to detect the foetal heartbeat. An ultrasound scan also allegedly showed no foetal movement. Based on these tests, doctors advised a medication-induced abortion.

Refusing to believe the diagnosis, Durga’s husband Rahul Dwivedi sought a second opinion. “The pregnancy had already been classified as high-risk, so we were skeptical,” he said. The family rushed Durga to a private diagnostic centre in Bharhut Nagar, where a fresh ultrasound confirmed that the baby was very much alive and healthy.

Acting quickly, the family transferred Durga to a private nursing home. She underwent an emergency caesarean section and delivered a baby boy weighing 3.8 kilograms. Both mother and child are in stable condition and recovering well.

The family has demanded strict action against the staff at the district hospital. “Had we followed their advice, we would have lost our healthy baby for no reason,” a relative told news agency. The incident has sparked outrage over the state of public health facilities in Satna and beyond.

Satna’s Chief Medical and Health Officer, LK Tiwari, confirmed that an inquiry has been launched. “We’ve written to the Dean of the Medical College and the Civil Surgeon. Strict action will be taken against those found negligent,” he stated. (Agencies)
