    Argentine players apologize for chants

Following their title victory in Copa America final, Argentine player Enzo Fernandez has apologized for allegedly singing chants featuring racial remarks during their celebrations.

It was an Indian weather reporter who first brought Enzo’s Instagram post to attention. International media outlets then picked up the story. Enzo apologized after facing backlash for singing a song said to criticize French players and include racist references.

“I want to apologize for the video I posted on Instagram during our national team’s celebrations. The language used in that song can never be justified. I am opposed to all forms of discrimination. The words in that video go against my beliefs. Please forgive me,” said Enzo.

Enzo clarified that hateful words and songs can never be accepted under any circumstance. Along with making it clear to football fans, using better language going forward was emphasized.

The apology comes as the controversy gained traction online. Videos from the celebrations appeared to show players singing chants targeting France, sparking criticism given tensions from the World Cup match between the two nations earlier in the year.

Chelsea teammates and French internationals Wesley Fofana and Malang Sarr unfollowed Enzo on Instagram amid the backlash. Enzo is yet to comment further and it remains to be seen if he faces sanctions from his club or country. However, a lesson on being mindful of offensive songs or gestures seems to have been learnt.
