Another rainy day for Jammu, HP, Uttarakhand; landslides likely

Tawi, May 17

The Western Disturbance that has approached Jammu and will continue to give good rain and thundershower activities over Jammu and Kashmir, Pradesh and Uttarakhand. There are also bright chances of snowfall in the upper reaches of these states.
According to Skymet, the intensity of ongoing activities over all the hilly states will be light to moderate. Chances of very heavy rain and thundershower are completely ruled out. However, isolated pockets may receive some intense showers leading to landslides.
By evening of May 18, the Western Disturbance will lose its strength and start moving away. Thus, we expect to gradually start clearing up from all the three states. However, light rains might continue in some parts due to the remnants of the weather system.
Further, another strong Western Disturbance is expected to approach the hills around May 21, leading to commencement of rain and thundershower activities once again over Jammu and Kashmir. By May 22, the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will also start receiving rains. During this period, one after the other Western Disturbances will approach the hills of North India. This trend is expected to continue until May 24. Thus, we expect rains to occur with increased intensity over the Western Himalayas.
Generally, the frequency of Western Disturbances reduces in the month of March itself. However, this year the situation has been a little different. The trend of frequent Western Disturbances approaching North India started in January and is continuing until now.
Looking at the ongoing conditions, we do not expect the weather in the hills to become completely dry in the near future.

The weather will remain pleasant. However, pilgrims of Chardham Yatra and tourists visiting different parts of the northern hills might face some difficulties in the form of landslides.
