The untimely demise of legendary Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila in 1988 left a void in the industry that is still felt today. However, his musical legacy continues to live on through his son Jaiman Chamkila who recently opened up about maintaining a relationship with his father's first family.
In a interview, Jaiman shared that he remains in contact with Chamkila's daughters from his first marriage to Gurmail Kaur. The singer was first wed to Gurmail Kaur and had two daughters – Amandeep and Kamaldeep, before marrying his singing partner Amarjot. Jaiman mentioned that while his relationship with his stepmother is cordial, he bonded with his two stepsisters and they often reminisce about their father.
Jaiman further said “Sometimes we speak and she would say that if your father was around, we wouldn't be in such state. He worked really hard, people's evil eyes impacted him, he had too many enemies.” This reflects how the family continues to feel the pain of Chamkila's untimely death under mysterious circumstances.
Through staying connected with his stepsisters and late father's first wife, Jaiman is helping keep the singer's memories alive. The recent biopic on Chamkila's life has also revived interest in his enduring music legacy, ensuring Amar Singh Chamkila is never forgotten for his contributions to Punjab's cultural landscape.
