Young opener Abhishek Sharma had a dream IPL season with Sunrisers Hyderabad, scoring runs consistently. His stellar domestic performances helped him get selected in the Indian squad for the upcoming Zimbabwe tour. The left-hander recalled the dream-come-true moment and how his close friend Shubman Gill's support made it even more special.
Speaking about his India call up, Abhishek said receiving the first call from Gill after the selection was announced is a moment he will always remember fondly. “Shubman was the one who contacted me as soon as my name came out in the squad. It was extremely encouraging getting so many congratulatory messages, but Gill's call meant a lot more as he has seen my journey closely over the years,” he stated.
Abhishek and Gill have opened together for Punjab from their U-14 days and share a great bond. The 23-year-old acknowledged how Gill's rise in international cricket inspired him to work harder on his game. His father revealed consistency was an issue earlier but Abhishek has realized it recently through Gill's example.
Making the Indian team was a dream for Abhishek since starting his professional career. He said staying focused on continuous improvement helped him get selected despite not knowing the tour's destination initially. The talented batsman can't wait to take the field for India for the first time on their Zimbabwe tour and make his family proud watching him live in action.
