The decision of the National Medical Commission (NMC) to increase the number of MBBS seats in Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) Srinagar and Jammu marks a significant milestone in strengthening the healthcare infrastructure of Jammu and Kashmir. Of course, this is a new milestone in J&K’s healthcare journey. After granting the permission for increasing the annual MBBS intake capacity at Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar from 200 to 250, the NMC has now given approval to increase GMC Jammu’s annual MBBS intake by 50 seats, raising the total capacity from 200 to 250 from the 2026-27 academic session.
This, of course, is a strategic investment in the UT’s healthcare infrastructure because better outcomes are bound to follow with an added workforce. It was the need of the hour as the demand for quality healthcare services has been rising in J&K on account of population boom, changing patterns of diseases, and high expectations of the people. Augmentation of medical professionals in the UT will obviously enhance the healthcare services besides making the approach more accessible. The move has the potential to address the shortage of trained doctors in the Union Territory. This will improve doctor-patient ratio, which is quite significant for plugging the gaps presently impacting medical facilities in the rural pockets of the region. With more number of doctors becoming qualified year after year, the government should bring some policies to ensure that the new comer doctors stay for a considerable number of years while serving rural hamlets.
It is a hard fact that remote and underserved areas require a good number of medical professionals and therefore the government should come up with effective measures to address the issue through proper placement of additional workforce in the healthcare sector of the UT.
Medical colleges are not merely centres for producing doctors; rather they are complete solutions for research needs, innovation and specialized treatments, therefore additional MBBS seats will go a long way in fulfilling all these objectives in a better way providing greater benefits to the people of J&K than ever before. By expanding the intake capacity, the NMC has given further momentum to strengthening these institutions and enhancing their role in meeting the healthcare requirements of the region.
The development also underlines the importance of sustained investment in medical education, infrastructure, faculty development and modern healthcare facilities so that the benefits of this expansion translate into improved patient care and better health outcomes for the people.
