Search operation in Baramulla called off after militants escape

Date:

Baramulla, October 3: The combing and search operation following the terror attack here was called off after the militants escaped.

Police recovered a GPS, a cutter and some magazines from the spot.

Militants had attacked the battalion headquarters of Army's 46 Rashtriya Rifles on Sunday night and tried to sneak in; the bid was foiled.

A Border Security Force guard who was manning the outer post of the army base was killed and another jawan was injured in the attack that was carried days after the army conducted surgical strikes on militant launching pads in PoK.

The firing lasted for nearly two hours and the first burst of fire was heard at around 10.25 pm.

“The militants were beaten back and they were not able to breach the camp when they lobbed grenades and fired indiscriminately to enter the camp,” a police officer said.

Later, joint teams of police and army carried out searches around the army base to look for militants.

The attack on the battalion headquarters is the second militant attack on the army during the current unrest. On August 17, militants had ambushed an army convoy in the town that had left two army men and a policeman dead.
