GLASGOW, Jul 28: National record holder Sarvesh Kushare scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a silver medal in the men’s high jump at the Commonwealth Games, finishing second with a best clearance of 2.25m here late on Monday.
The 31-year-old secured the country’s best-ever result in the event after clearing 2.25m. Jamaica’s Romaine Beckford also managed 2.25m but claimed the gold on countback after both athletes failed to clear 2.28m. England’s Jack Kimani took the bronze with a jump of 2.20m.
India’s other entrant, Adarsh Ram, finished fifth after clearing 2.15m.
Kushare’s silver surpassed India’s previous best performance in the men’s high jump at the Commonwealth Games. Until now, Tejaswin Shankar was the only Indian medallist in the event, having won bronze at the 2022 Birmingham Games.
The silver also marked Kushare’s maiden Commonwealth Games medal, achieved on his debut appearance at the multi-sport event. His podium finish adds another milestone to Indian athletics on the international stage. (Agencies)
