Fleet of 400 e-buses sanctioned by GoI

Jammu Tawi, July 25: The Transport sector in the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K)
is soon going to be revolutionized as the central government has accorded sanction for four hundred (400) more new electric buses (e-buses) to provide connectivity to each and every corner of this UT.
As per the latest decision of the central government, two hundred more e-buses, 100 each for both Jammu and Srinagar cities will be provided to both the capital cities under Smart City, while another 200 electric buses will be provided to J&K Transport Corporation for both Jammu and Kashmir regions, official sources said.
“The government has accorded sanction for 200 e-buses for both Jammu and Srinagar and the tendering process is in the final stages,” General Manager, Jammu Smart City Limited (JSCL), Ashish Anand, informed the Northlines, when contacted.
Meanwhile, the official sources in the J&K RTC also informed the Northlines that the Corporation will also get 200 e-buses for giving public transport connectivity to each and every uncovered area of both Jammu and Kashmir regions.
It may be mentioned here that already 200 e-buses have been operating in both Jammu and Srinagar and the decision of the central government to provide 400 more e-buses will totally revolutionise the transport sector in J&K connecting each and every corner of this UT, especially the remote and hilly areas, which remain cut off during inclement and adverse weather conditions.
The electric buses were first introduced in J&K in January 2024 and were flagged off by Union Home Minister, Amit Shah in June 2024.
The J&K government had announced free ride for the women in the e-buses operating in the J&K UT and this free ride for women is most likely to continue in the fleet of 400 new e-buses, which are most likely to reach here in a couple of months, the official sources further informed.
All the 400 e-buses, which the J&K will get, will be fully Air Conditioned and will also be equipped with high-tech CCTV cameras, they said.
