Udhampur, Jul 4: The Ramnagar-Udhampur road was closed to traffic on Saturday after heavy rainfall triggered a landslide near Kaugha, blocking the route with large boulders and disrupting vehicular movement.
Officials said the landslide occurred early in the morning, prompting local authorities to rush to the spot and deploy earthmoving machinery to clear the debris and restore traffic.
Road contractor Pushpinder Singh said information about the blockage was received around 7 a.m., following which machinery was mobilised for immediate restoration.
“We received a message around 7 a.m. that the road had been blocked. Machinery was arranged immediately, and efforts are underway to clear the debris and restore traffic at the earliest,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Gandoh Arun Kumar Badyal advised residents to avoid landslide-prone areas and unnecessary travel in view of the prevailing weather conditions. He cautioned that continued rainfall could trigger landslides, flash floods and further road blockages.
Authorities have appealed to the public to remain vigilant as heavy rain continues in parts of the region. Debris clearance operations were in progress, and traffic is expected to resume once the road is declared safe for movement.
