Jammu and Kashmir has seen notable advancements in digital expansion, connectivity, and infrastructure during the last several years. But beneath this story of progress exists a crucial issue that will continue to influence the socioeconomic future of the area: youth unemployment.
The Union Territory is at a turning point in its history, with a sizable majority of its population under 30. Young people’s hopes are growing quickly, but career prospects have not kept up.
The Growing Challenge of Unemployment
One of the most urgent problems in Jammu & Kashmir is still young unemployment. The region’s young unemployment rates are greater than the national average, according to statistics from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2022–2023.
Unemployment among educated people is especially concerning. More and more recent graduates and postgraduates are having trouble finding employment that fits their qualifications. Young people are becoming more and more frustrated as a result of this mismatch between educational and career options
Skill Gap and Employability
The ongoing disparity between education and employable skills is one of the main causes of unemployment. Even while enrollment in higher education and literacy rates have increased, many graduates lack skills that are applicable to the workplace.
Additionally, young people have a strong preference for government positions, which are scarce. Opportunities in the private sector, however, are still emerging in the area.
Promoting skill-based education, vocational training, and industry-linked programs that prepare young people for a variety of professional choices is necessary to address this problem.
The role of Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship is becoming a viable alternative in the face of scarce employment prospects. Young people are being inspired to try new things by government programs that support startups and self-employment.
There is a lot of opportunity in industries including tourism, handicrafts, agriculture, and internet services. But obstacles like finance availability, a lack of mentorship, and little market exposure still exist.
To fully utilize the entrepreneurial potential of the young people in the area, a startup-friendly ecosystem must be established.
Migration and changing aspirations
Young people in Jammu and Kashmir are increasingly migrating to other states in pursuit of better job and educational possibilities.
Although migration creates new opportunities, it also highlights the shortcomings of the local labor market. Sustained attempts to create meaningful employment opportunities will be necessary to keep talent in the area.
The way forward
A thorough and multifaceted strategy is needed to address young unemployment in Jammu & Kashmir:
- Strengthening vocational training and skill development
- Promoting investment from the private sector
- Encouraging startups and entrepreneurship
- Improving career counseling and awareness
Conclusion
The goals of Jammu and Kashmir’s youth are directly related to the region’s future. Despite ongoing difficulties, the area has enormous potential for development and change.
Jammu and Kashmir can empower its youth and create a more sustainable and affluent future by emphasizing inclusive policy, skill development, and job creation.
