8 Held for Vandalism During Protests Over Alleged Sexual Assault of Student in J&K

SRINAGAR, Apr 14: Police in Jammu and Kashmir have arrested eight individuals for allegedly indulging in vandalism during protests sparked by a sexual harassment case involving a school lecturer in Baramulla district, officials said on Tuesday.

Authorities said a government higher secondary school lecturer in Sopore was booked on Monday following a complaint of sexual assault lodged by a female student.

In a post on its official X handle, Sopore Police said, “Sopore Police arrested 8 miscreants involved in vandalism during a student protest; 25 more identified. Strict action underway against those disturbing public order.”

A senior police officer confirmed that a case has been registered against lecturer Ghulam Hassan Mir based on the complaint. He added that students held protests after the incident came to light on Monday, though the situation remained largely peaceful.

Meanwhile, the Education Department has placed the accused lecturer under suspension and initiated a departmental inquiry. The Joint Director (North Kashmir) has been appointed as the inquiry officer and is expected to submit a report within 15 days, the officer said. (Agencies)
