    Flag Code Violations

There are many cases reported from across the nation on a regular basis where people inadvertently violate the norms of National Flag Code by disrespecting the Tricolour on different counts.

In this very context, reportedly the Jammu and Kashmir Police has arrested a man for disrespecting the National Flag in Doda district. The cops have taken immediate cognizance of an incident involving the dishonouring of the Indian National Flag, which came to light after a video went viral on social media platforms.

In this case, the accused person was seen cleaning the window glass of his house using Tricolour. The act prima facie amounts to an offence under Section 2 of the Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act, 1971, which strictly prohibits any act that disrespects the dignity of the National Flag.

Considering such cases, it becomes important that public campaigns should be started comprehensively across the Union Territory to impart vital awareness on the issue because many times, people commit similar actions due to lack of knowledge of the law of the land. It is better to educate people on this law in schools so that no one should give any alibi on the ground of ignorance.

In this very case, the cops should investigate the matter thoroughly and in case of any deliberate attempt to disgrace the Tricolour, the stringent possible punishment should be given to set an example and deter others having similar mindset from repeating such unscrupulous actions.

It is worthwhile to note that the National Flag is not merely a cloth but a symbol of India’s greatness and therefore every single resident of the country should treat and offer this entity with highest order of respect.

It is pertinent to mention that by comprehensive awareness drives the unintentional violations can be avoided and people can be saved from facing difficult situations on account of breaching the law of the land. The government holds the responsibility to disseminate information among the masses to educate them about the proper use and handling for the National Flag as this is an important issue.

The authorities should remain liberal against unintentional violations in such cases and should leave the offenders by giving strict warnings not to repeat the act under any circumstance but for those who commit disrespect to Tricolour deliberately must be dealt with firmly as per law to maintain the dignity of the nation.

Awareness and strict enforcement should go hand in hand. Only then can we ensure that the honour of the Tricolour is upheld in letter and spirit across the Union Territory and the country.
