SRINAGAR, Feb 6: Night temperatures across Jammu and Kashmir continued to remain below normal, with all weather stations in the Kashmir Valley recording sub-zero minimums, even as the Meteorological Department (MeT) forecast largely dry weather across the Union Territory till February 16.
The MeT said no major spell of rain or snowfall is expected during the period, though brief and light precipitation may occur at isolated places in higher reaches.
According to the forecast, there is a possibility of light snowfall at a few higher reaches of north and central Kashmir on February 6, mainly during late evening or night hours. February 7 and 8 are expected to remain generally dry across most parts of the region.
On February 9, light rain or snow may occur at isolated higher altitudes during night hours. This will be followed by generally cloudy conditions on February 10, with chances of light rain or snow accompanied by gusty winds at many places.
The weather on February 11 is likely to remain partly to generally cloudy, with light rain or snow possible at scattered locations. February 12 and 13 are forecast to remain dry.
Cloud cover is expected to increase again on February 14, with a possibility of light snowfall at isolated higher reaches, while February 15 and 16 are likely to remain partly to generally cloudy without any significant precipitation.
“Overall, no major rain or snow is forecast across Jammu and Kashmir till February 16,” the MeT said.
Meanwhile, cold conditions continued to prevail as minimum night temperatures remained below normal across the Union Territory. The MeT said minimum temperatures stayed 1–2 degrees Celsius below average at many places in the Kashmir division, while scattered locations in the Jammu division also recorded similar departures.
In Kashmir, Sonamarg in Ganderbal district emerged as the coldest place, recording a minimum temperature of minus 8.3 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam in Anantnag district registered minus 7.5 degrees Celsius, while the ski resort of Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 7.8 degrees Celsius.
Srinagar city also remained under the grip of cold, with the minimum temperature settling at minus 2.5 degrees Celsius.
In the Jammu division, Bhaderwah emerged as the coldest place, recording a minimum temperature of minus 1.5 degrees Celsius. (Agencies)
