Light rain or snowfall likely from Dec 30, dry conditions expected after Jan 2
Jammu/Srinagar, Dec 27: Temperatures dipped sharply across Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, with the Jammu plains witnessing a notable fall in minimum temperatures accompanied by dense to moderate fog, while Kashmir continued to reel under widespread sub-zero conditions.
In the Jammu region, night temperatures dropped at most places. Jammu city recorded a minimum of 7.1°C, down from 10°C a day earlier. Banihal settled at 2.8°C against 3.8°C, while Batote recorded 4.6°C, down from 6.1°C. Bhaderwah witnessed a sharp dip, settling at 0.2°C compared to 2.6°C on Friday, and Rajouri recorded 1.6°C, down from 4.5°C. The Meteorological Department said dense to moderate fog was observed at isolated places in the Jammu plains, reducing visibility to 1,200 metres in Jammu and 8,000 metres in Udhampur during morning hours.
Meanwhile, Kashmir Valley continued to experience intense cold with minimum temperatures remaining below freezing at most locations. Srinagar recorded a low of minus 2.6°C, a sharp drop from 0.2°C the previous night. Qazigund settled at minus 2.8°C, Pahalgam at minus 4.8°C, and Kupwara at minus 3.8°C. Gulmarg recorded minus 4.2°C, while Sonamarg settled at minus 5.8°C.
The IMD has forecast a change in weather from December 30, with light rain or snowfall expected at scattered places, becoming more widespread between December 31 and January 1. Generally dry weather is likely to prevail across the region after January 2.
