Oppn Leaders Meet in Parliament to Finalize Winter Session Strategy

New Delhi: Leaders of several opposition parties met in Parliament on Wednesday to chalk out a joint strategy for the ongoing Winter Session, though the Trinamool Congress (TMC) remained absent for the second consecutive time, leaders said.

Floor leaders from the Congress, DMK, RJD, SP, JMM, CPI(M), CPI, IUML, NCP–SP, and Shiv Sena (UBT) attended the meeting, which was held in the chamber of Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, was also present.

The Opposition leaders said their unity and sustained pressure had compelled the government to agree to a discussion on electoral reforms, including SIR. They reiterated that ensuring smooth functioning of Parliament was the government’s responsibility.

The Opposition has been demanding a parliamentary debate on SIR and continued protests inside both Houses.

Earlier in the day, leaders from multiple parties also staged a demonstration outside Parliament’s Makar Dwar, raising slogans against the new labour codes. They alleged the codes were anti-worker and demanded their withdrawal. (Agencies)
