New Delhi: The second day of Parliament’s Winter Session was adjourned at 2:05 PM on Tuesday after continuous protests by Opposition MPs demanding a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Repeated sloganeering and disruptions forced multiple adjournments, preventing the Lok Sabha from functioning for more than a few minutes at a time.
Presiding over the Chair, MP Dilip Saika appealed to the Opposition to maintain order, stressing that the country expected Parliament to function. “You do not want the House to function, and the country is watching… Every day it cannot happen,” Saika said before adjourning the session.
Attempts to take up matters under Rule 377 were halted as Opposition MPs gathered in the well, shouting “Chairman sir, listen to us also” and raising slogans such as “vote chor, gaddi chod.”
The House faced three adjournments since proceedings began at 11 AM. The first came within minutes, with a brief reconvening at noon that again collapsed due to disruptions. During short intervals of order, ministers and MPs managed to table committee reports and take up limited Question Hour business.
Earlier, just before the noon adjournment, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticised the Opposition for obstructing proceedings, reiterating that the government was open to a calm debate on all issues. “Parliament functions according to rules… you cannot bury other issues,” he said as Opposition members continued sloganeering.
With disruptions persisting for the second consecutive day, the Winter Session remains stalled, even as the government urges cooperation to ensure smooth legislative functioning. (Agencies)
