New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain petitions seeking an extension of the six-month deadline for registering Waqf properties under the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, directing applicants to approach the Waqf Tribunal instead.
A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih said that since the Act provides a remedy before the Tribunal, applicants may file their requests there by December 6 — the final date for registration.
Applicants argued that the challenge extended beyond registration on the UMEED portal to issues relating to digitisation, and that the deadline would lapse before the Tribunal could examine such difficulties.
The court, however, clarified that anyone facing genuine technical or procedural hurdles could seek relief from the Tribunal, including an extension of time.
“If the time freezes in the portal, you cannot be held responsible. If the Tribunal allows you, your six months will be counted and your application considered. You do not require permission. If difficulty arises, you can always apply to us,” the bench said. (Agencies)
