Jammu, Nov 22: Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma on Saturday accused the ruling National Conference of committing “electoral fraud” by seeking a steep 20% hike in power tariff despite promising free electricity before elections.
Sharma said the NC’s 2024 election manifesto had “collapsed under its own lies,” asserting that Omar Abdullah had pledged 200 units of free electricity to every household in J&K but failed to deliver. “Instead of fulfilling that promise, his government is preparing to burden people with an outrageous tariff hike,” he said.
Challenging the Chief Minister, Sharma demanded the government reveal how many households actually received the promised free 200 units, alleging people had been misled.
He said the BJP would strongly oppose any move that increases the financial hardship of common citizens. The proposed hike, he added, has triggered widespread resentment among political parties, traders, and consumers, who view it as “unjust, exploitative, and anti-people.”
Sharma urged the NC government to withdraw the proposal immediately and fulfil its election commitments rather than “punishing the very people it vowed to support.” (Agencies)
