J&K: Former Police SI Jailed for Forging Birth Date to Extend Service Tenure

Srinagar, Nov 10: The Economic Offences Wing of the Crime Branch Kashmir has secured the conviction of former Sub-Inspector Jagdesh Singh for manipulating his date of birth in official records to unlawfully extend his police service by two years.

A Srinagar court sentenced Singh, son of Kartar Singh and a resident of Atina, Budgam, to three years of simple imprisonment along with fines for offences related to fraud and forgery. The conviction was linked to FIR No. 32/2013 registered under Sections 420, 468, 471, and 201 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC).

According to the Crime Branch, the case originated from a communication from the Police Headquarters (PHQ) J&K, which revealed that Singh had altered his year of birth from 1957 to 1959 to illegally prolong his service tenure. Investigations confirmed that he had fraudulently modified his date of birth to November 10, 1959, in official records, including his Character Roll and matriculation certificate, to gain undue service benefits.

During the trial, the Economic Offences Wing produced sufficient witnesses and documentary evidence to establish Singh’s guilt. After examining the evidence, the Court of the City Judge, Srinagar, found him guilty under Sections 420, 511, and 468 of the RPC.

Singh was sentenced to three years of simple imprisonment and fined ₹5,000 under Section 420 read with 511 RPC, and another three years with a fine of ₹5,000 under Section 468 RPC. In case of default in fine payment, he will serve an additional six months in prison. Both sentences will run concurrently.

Reaffirming its commitment to uphold integrity in public service, the Economic Offences Wing said it remains dedicated to investigating and prosecuting all acts of fraud, forgery, and corruption, regardless of rank or position. (Agencies)
