Jammu Tawi, September 18: Tensions erupted at the city’s Commerce College after some outsiders assaulted the college students. Students blocked the Jewel Chowk-Canal Road and staged a protest. After about three hours of protests, the students calmed down.
During this time, members of Sikh organizations and other groups also arrived to support of the affected student. According to reports, a student who had been rusticated from the Commerce College entered the college campus and assaulted some students. The youth then returned to the college with some of his friends, assaulted several students, and fled the scene.
Following this incident, angry students began a protest, blocking the road, and staging a sit-in protest. Students stated that the accused student has several criminal cases against him. He has been rusticated, but it is alleged that he roams freely around the college and consumes drugs. His emboldened behavior has led him to carry weapons, and the gates remain open for him at all times. The students stated that the college Principal’s inaction is emboldening anti-social elements.
They stated that they will not end their protest until the police arrest the attacker. Upon receiving information about the protest, senior police officers, including Superintendent of Police (North), arrived at the scene. Members of various Sikh organizations also arrived at the protest site to support the affected students. The road remained blocked for approximately three hours. Later, after talks between police officers and the organization’s leaders, the students ended their protest. Social activist Balwinder Singh stated that the matter has been brought to the attention of the police. Additional sections will be added after investigation. He stated that such an environment will not be tolerated in educational institutions.
