Srinagar, Aug 3: A joint anti-terror operation by security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district entered its third day on Sunday, following the killing of two terrorists and the critical injury of another during the ongoing encounter in the Akhal forest area.
The operation began on Friday after intelligence inputs alerted security agencies about the presence of terrorists hiding in the dense forest region. A coordinated cordon and search operation (CASO) was launched by the Indian Army, CRPF, and J&K Police.
As the joint forces tightened the perimeter, they came under fire, triggering a fierce gunfight. One terrorist was neutralized on Friday, and a second was killed on Saturday. Officials confirmed that a third terrorist was critically injured during the exchange.
However, with intermittent firing continuing overnight, security officials suspect that more terrorists could be holed up in the area. “The presence of additional militants has not been ruled out. The operation will continue until the area is completely sanitised,” a senior police officer said.
To track and neutralize any remaining threats, security forces are deploying advanced surveillance equipment, including drones, thermal imaging devices, and night vision gear. These tools are assisting ground teams in navigating the difficult terrain and maintaining a strategic advantage.
Sources have identified the slain terrorists as local recruits, further highlighting the ongoing challenge of homegrown militancy in the region.
As the operation enters a critical phase, authorities have advised local residents to stay away from the area. Search teams are combing every inch of the forest to ensure no militant escapes the cordon.
This encounter marks one of the most intense prolonged gunfights in south Kashmir in recent weeks, signaling a renewed focus by security forces on eliminating terror threats in the region.
More details are awaited as the operation continues. (Agencies)
