SC seeks immediate eviction of ex-CJI Chandrachud from Official Bungalow

New Delhi, Jul 6 — The Supreme Court (SC) administration has formally urged the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to take immediate steps to vacate Bungalow No. 5, Krishna Menon Marg, which is still occupied by former Chief Justice of India, Justice DY Chandrachud, despite expiry of his official retention period.

According to a letter sent by a Supreme Court official, Justice Chandrachud’s permitted occupancy ended on May 10, 2025, as per Rule 3B of the 2022 Supreme Court Judges Rules, which allows retired CJIs to retain official accommodation for six months post-retirement. An additional special retention permission granted to him lapsed on May 31, 2025.

The SC administration emphasized that the bungalow is part of its official house pool and must be returned for reallocation. “Possession of the bungalow should be taken without any further delay,” the letter stated.

The request underscores the importance of adherence to judicial housing norms and comes amid increasing scrutiny of post-retirement benefits and entitlements of top public officials.
