The alarming rise in theft incidents across Jammu city has become a pressing concern, reflecting a serious lapse in the efficiency and preparedness of the Police Department. Despite the installation of CCTV cameras and multiple complaints from the public, thefts continue to occur unabated, casting serious doubts on the effectiveness of the policing system.
The recent theft at the Jogi Gate cremation ground is a glaring example of this disturbing trend. In a span of just 15 months, this site alone has witnessed thefts on three separate occasions.
In the latest incident, a thief was caught on CCTV while stealing money meant for religious offerings. Earlier, even ornaments from idols were stolen in this cremation ground. Despite the presence of surveillance cameras, the crime was not deterred—a testament to the lack of real-time monitoring and prompt response.
It is even more concerning that the cremation ground has seen the theft of fans and other essential items in the past. While CCTV cameras have been installed at three gates of the premises, crimes continue to occur without consequence. This reflects a systemic failure—not just in surveillance infrastructure but also in the will and capacity of law enforcement to act swiftly and decisively.
Notably this cremation ground, located less than 100 meters from a police check post on the 3rd Tawi Bridge and despite this the theft continues to occur with alarming regularity, it raises serious questions about the effectiveness of local law enforcement and the prevailing sense of impunity among criminals. The fact that such incidents are taking place in close proximity to a police presence not only undermines public confidence but also points to a worrying lapse in surveillance and patrolling.
The people of Jammu deserve a police force that is proactive, not reactive. The current situation points to negligence, poor surveillance follow-up, and an overall weakening of public trust. It’s high time the authorities acknowledge this deepening crisis and take urgent, accountable steps to restore order and safety. Until then, the rising number of thefts will remain not just a blot on the city’s reputation, but a reflection of a crumbling law and order system.
