New Delhi, Mar 19: A Delhi court will deliver its verdict on March 21 regarding the bail plea of Jammu and Kashmir Member of Parliament, Engineer Rashid, who has been jailed in connection with a terror funding case. The decision, initially scheduled for today, was deferred by Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh.
Engineer Rashid, whose real name is Sheikh Abdul Rashid, was granted interim bail by the court on September 10, 2019, to allow him to campaign for the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections. His bail was extended multiple times, including once in October 2019 due to his father’s health condition, with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) not opposing the application on that basis.
Rashid has been imprisoned in Tihar Jail since 2019 after his arrest by the NIA under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in a 2017 terror funding case. He has been facing charges related to alleged links with terror funding activities in the region.
Rashid’s case has attracted significant attention, especially as the elections for the 90-member Jammu and Kashmir Assembly took place between September 18 and October 1, 2019, with the National Conference-Congress alliance securing a majority of 48 seats.
The court will now decide on his bail request on March 21.
