For the last many decades, it has been observed and analyzed that narcotics produced in Afghanistan do find a way to enter India through the common borders with Pakistan including IB and LOC making J&K and Punjab the most vulnerable entities as far as heroin smuggling is concerned.
Earlier, it was seen that the quantity of drugs which entered Indian soil through Pakistan was not significant but the scenario today has turned alarming with smuggled entity’s weight crossing almost all limits of the past.
Reportedly, In the biggest seizure of narcotics in 2025, the Amritsar rural police has confiscated 30 Kg heroin from a cross-border drug peddler of Basarke Gillan village under the Gharinda Police Station and in the same context, the Jammu and Kashmir Police has seized 6 Kg of narcotics, believed to be high-grade heroin worth over Rs 30 crore in the international market from Sair Bhawani village in the Nowshera sector near the Line of Control in Rajouri district.
The seizure in Rajouri District was made on the disclosure of the arrested kingpin of the racket, a resident of Lamberi, who was arrested 10 days ago following an investigation of a case registered last year. Two more accused have also been arrested during the operation. The arrested kingpin has revealed that he was getting heroin smuggled into India from Pakistan-based operatives. These recoveries and the arrests of accused have once again highlighted Pakistan’s persistent attempts to destabilize India through narco-terrorism. Such a high scale of the illicit drug trade is simply meant for ruining the lives of youth of the country besides fueling terror finance. As the big consignments of narcotics are being smuggled from Pakistan, there is a dire need to plug in the existing gaps in the security and surveillance mechanisms along the India-Pakistan borders whether it is J&K or Punjab.
Despite technological advancements, the large quantities of drugs entering India suggest weaknesses in border intelligence, inadequate patrolling, and insufficient coordination between different security agencies. The fact that such massive consignment evaded detection for a period of time raises questions about the effectiveness of the preventive measures and the need for stronger, integrated counter-narcotics operations.
All said and done, the focus should be on tightening border security, utilizing better intelligence gathering, and reinforcing counter-terrorism strategies that can effectively contain the drug smuggling and infiltration also, which is another big headache for those helming the affairs of the country.
