Maharashtra: At least eight people have been confirmed dead, and around 14 workers are feared trapped after a powerful blast caused the roof of the Ordnance Factory in Bhandara, Maharashtra, to collapse on Friday. The explosion, which occurred at approximately 10:30 AM in the LTP section of the factory, was so intense that it was heard up to 5 kilometers away.
Authorities immediately launched search and rescue operations, with teams from the State Disaster Rescue Force, police, fire personnel, and medical services being rushed to the site. Earthmovers have been deployed to clear debris from the collapsed roof. As of now, five people have been rescued, though many remain trapped under the rubble.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his condolences for the loss of life and assured that senior officials, including the district Superintendent of Police and district collector, are coordinating the rescue operations. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, during an event in Nagpur, also condoled the tragedy, offering silent prayers for the victims.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his grief over the incident, offering condolences to the bereaved families and praying for the quick recovery of the injured. He confirmed that rescue teams were at the site and all efforts were being made to assist the affected individuals.
The opposition has criticized the ruling BJP government, blaming the incident on the “failure” of the Modi government.
Search and rescue operations continue at the site as authorities work to locate and save any remaining survivors.
