Fire breaks out at Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj

Prayagraj, Jan 19: A massive fire erupted at the Maha Kumbh Mela site on Sunday following a cylinder blast in Sector 19, officials said. However, there were no immediate reports of casualties. According to Bhaskar Mishra, In-charge of Akhara Police Station, two cylinders exploded in the sector, causing a fire that spread to nearby tents. The fire was quickly brought under control, and authorities assured that all people in the area were safe, with no injuries reported. “An investigation will be conducted,” Mishra added.

Ravindra Kumar, District Magistrate of Prayagraj, confirmed that the fire broke out at around 4:30 pm in the tent of Gita Press and spread to 10 nearby tents. Authorities immediately initiated relief operations.

The official Maha Kumbh 2025 Twitter handle expressed shock over the incident, stating, “Very sad! The fire incident at #MahaKumbh has shocked everyone. The administration is ensuring immediate relief and rescue operations. We pray Maa Ganga for everyone’s safety.” A video clip shared by the handle showed a thick column of black smoke rising from the affected area.

Earlier in the day, pilgrims continued to gather at the Maha Kumbh Mela despite dense fog covering the area. The adverse weather did not seem to affect the attendance, with more than 77.2 million devotees having bathed at the Sangam Triveni as of January 18. The footfall is expected to rise as four major Shahi Snans are yet to take place.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, which began on January 13, will continue until February 26. Key upcoming bathing dates include January 29 (Mauni Amavasya – Second Shahi Snan), February 3 (Basant Panchami – Third Shahi Snan), February 12 (Maghi Purnima), and February 26 (Maha Shivaratri).
