9 JKPS Officers set to be inducted into IPS, promotions expected soon

JAMMU, Jan 8: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has initiated the process to induct nine Jammu and Kashmir Police Services (JKPS) officers into the Indian Police Service (IPS), with promotions for several officers expected shortly.

Following a recent cadre review of the AGMUT Cadre IPS, which increased the number of senior duty posts from 70 to 74, the induction vacancies for JKPS officers have been raised from seven to nine. Seven of these vacancies will be backdated to when they originally became available, while two new vacancies will take effect from January 1, 2025, when the revised IPS cadre review came into force.

Officials noted that the current IPS quota is divided in a 67:33 ratio—67% for direct recruits and 33% for induction from State Police Services. This ratio was restored in 2014 by the BJP Government after it was previously changed by the UPA Government to a 50:50 split.

Over the past three years, 44 JKPS officers have been inducted into the IPS, marking a significant change after a decade-long halt from 2011 to 2021 due to legal and administrative challenges. However, many senior JKPS officers have faced stagnation at the SSP rank due to delayed IPS inductions, with some even retiring as SSPs due to the backlog.

The upcoming inductions are expected to benefit senior JKPS officers from the 1999 batch, whose promotion to IGP and DIG-equivalent ranks has recently been approved. Government amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Police Services Rules now allow for temporary promotions, ensuring smoother career progression. Formal promotion orders for these officers are expected to be issued before Republic Day.
