Jammu Tawi: In a key meeting aimed at resolving long-standing issues in Jammu and Kashmir’s transport sector, Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Jammu and Kashmir assured transporters that their grievances would be addressed promptly. The meeting with Karan Singh Wazir, Chairman of the All J&K Transport Welfare Association (AJKTWA), and other office bearers discussed several critical issues, including pending payments, the formulation of a new transport policy, and expediting Smart City projects.
The major concern raised by the AJKTWA was the non-payment of dues for services rendered by transporters during various government events. Payments for the AIIMS Rally (2019) (₹2 crores), Palli Rally (2022) (₹3 crores), and the PM Rally (2024) (₹7 crores) remain outstanding, causing severe financial distress for many transporters. The LG assured that these payments would be processed within the next 10 days, providing significant relief to the community.
Another critical issue discussed was the lack of a cohesive transport policy in the region. The LG confirmed that a comprehensive and inclusive policy would be developed in consultation with stakeholders, aiming to modernize transport infrastructure, improve road safety, and introduce welfare measures for transport operators and drivers.
Additionally, concerns about the delayed implementation of Smart City initiatives, particularly the construction of modern bus stops, were raised. The LG pledged to expedite these projects to improve urban transport infrastructure.
During the meeting, Wazir also highlighted attempts by some individuals to disrupt the transport sector, and the LG assured that appropriate actions would be taken to maintain sectoral stability.
The LG’s assurances mark a significant step toward addressing the sector’s challenges, with transporters hopeful for improved conditions and financial stability. The timely and effective implementation of these commitments will be crucial in shaping a more organized and efficient transport system in Jammu and Kashmir.
