Srinagar, Dec 2: The Kashmir Valley’s night temperatures have shown slight improvement but remain below freezing, ahead of an expected Western Disturbance (WD) that could bring rain and snowfall to Jammu and Kashmir, officials reported.

The Meteorological (MeT) Department has forecasted that a weak WD is likely to affect the region, bringing light rain and snow to higher reaches and scattered areas from late Monday evening until Tuesday morning. Afterward, dry weather is expected to prevail until December 7, the MeT added. Another wet spell could occur on December 8, with light rain and snow predicted over higher reaches and at isolated places. The weather will remain dry again until December 12.

Despite the slight improvement in day and night temperatures, the Kashmir Valley continues to experience cold conditions. The tourist destination of Gulmarg emerged as the coldest place, recording a temperature of minus 2.9°C, followed by Pahalgam at 2.3°C on Monday. The minimum temperature in Srinagar improved slightly, settling at minus 0.8°C, which is 0.4°C above normal for the city during this time of year.

Fog engulfed Srinagar’s iconic Dal Lake and surrounding areas, causing disruptions in normal activities. Other areas such as Qazigund and Kokernag saw slight improvements in temperature, though they remained below or close to normal for this period.

In the frontier district of Kupwara, the temperature dipped slightly to minus 0.6°C, still 1.1°C above normal. The ski resort of Gulmarg, meanwhile, recorded a temperature of minus 2.9°C, slightly above normal for this time of year.
